SPECIAL INFORMATION FOR
EARLY CAREER C-L/PM PSYCHIATRISTS

Welcome!  •  Early Career Track CME Sessions  •  Social Activities

Welcome!

The APM Annual Meeting Committee encourages the attendance of junior faculty, psychosomatic fellows, residents, and medical students at this year's annual meeting in sunny Florida. We worked to design a series of symposia, workshops, and social events that are meant to apply specifically to the early career physician interested in psychosomatic medicine.

The Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine has a long and vibrant history. Founded in 1952 by pioneers in the field, it is an organization that brings together clinicians from around the world to explore the fascinating field of consultation-liaison psychiatry, to promote excellence in clincal care for patients with comorbid psychiatric and general medical conditions, and to provide leadership in influencing the direction and process of research, public policy, and interdisciplinary education. Along the way, we try to have fun!

APM is an organization that I discovered early in my residency that was an influential guide in my professional and academic development. The Academy, to this day, remains an important part of my professional life as a consultation psychiatrist."  —Tom Heinrich, MD, FAPM

The educational imperative of the Academy is clearly evident in the quality of the symposia, workshops, and papers presented at the annual meeting. In fact, the theme of this year’s meeting is education. The scientific merit of the Academy is also significant, as one is exposed to the most current and clinically practical research.

The possibility of establishing friendships and professional contacts with clinicians practicing consultation-liaison psychiatry in diverse locales and unique clinical environments is invaluable. Mentorship, an important tool in professional development, is also possible within the Academy as one is surrounded by individuals with like interests and experiences of various levels of seniority and experience.

The Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine has a strong past and a very promising future. The members of this year’s Annual Meeting Committee would like to encourage your attendance at the annual meeting in November and your participation in this energetic organization and fascinating field of medicine.

I began attending the APM annual meeting as a PGY-3 resident. I was extremely impressed with the diversity and breadth of high-quality presentations and found the APM to be a very welcoming organization that strives to involve early career psychiatrists. Numerous opportunities exist for fellowships and collaboration with colleagues at other institutions, and the annual meeting is the perfect opportunity to learn more!.  —Kristen Somers, MD, APM Webb Fellow 2009-2010

Social Activities and "Get to Know Us" Events

The APM Annual Meeting Committee has planned several fun activities that are geared toward early career PM psychiatrists.

Wednesday "Mixer" — after the first day of immersion in the pre-conference courses, come meet other med students, residents, and fellows who are attending this year's annual meeting. The mixer is by invitation only and scheduled for 5:15 to 6:00pm. Join the trainee listserv to find out more and to be sure to be added to the invitee list! To join the listserv, send your request from your preferred email address to the moderator, Adrienne Tan, MD, and indicate your trainee status and institution.

Wednesday Fellowship Directors' Forum — current PM fellows in training are invited to join the directors of fellowship programs in their annual pre-conference discussion of shared program issues. The forum takes place from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

Thursday and Friday Luncheon Tables — several tables will be reserved for students, residents, and fellows to visit with leaders in the field over lunch. The Thursday luncheon features a lecture by this year's APM Research Award recipient. The Friday luncheon includes the presentation of all other APM annual awards (maybe one of them will be for YOU if you win a Trainee Travel Award to the meeting!) followed by a lecture by this year's Hackett Award recipient.

One of the most salient experiences of training to be a C-L psychiatrist is being welcomed into a community of practice. APM was and continues to be a key organization that oriented me to the current ideas, experiences, and people that define the field. Through the meetings as well as opportunities for mentorship, the Academy has provided me with a forum for ongoing professional development and the maintenance of academic vitality.  —Adrienne Tan, MD, FRCP(C), APM Webb Fellow 2008-2009

Thursday Authors' Corner — this is a great opportunity to meet the APM members who have authored prominent books in psychosomatic medicine. The authors will gladly sign your copy (whether you bring your own or purchase at the meeting) — what could be more satisfying than to have a personally signed copy of an important book in your library! The Authors' Corner will be from 5:00 to 6:00pm on Thursday.

Thursday "People Hunt" during the Opening Welcome Reception — designed to introduce you to old-timers, past and current award winners, Council members, committee chairs, and other active APM members, you are invited to participate in a scavenger hunt for people. The winner of the hunt will receive a priceless award (or a pat on the back and a hearty handshake). The Reception is from 5:30 to 7:00pm.

Friday and Saturday "Early Riser" Run on the Beach — watch the daylight begin and limber up for the day while huffing and puffing with your new friends and acquaintances. Don't expect everyone to be running at the same pace! Anyone is welcome to join the run, which may include a few walkers. Gathering for the run is at 6:30am, returning to the hotel at 7:15am to shower up for the meeting.

Friday "Hot Havana Nights Salsa Dancing" — priced separately ($40) is a two-hour party and reception on the beach to honor new APM Webb fellows. This promises to be a festive time to celebrate our fresh talent in the Academy. Come dressed comfortably for Limbo competition and salsa dancing. Don't sweat it if you're not a dancer — no pressure for anything except for having fun with friends!
